We present a flexible touch-sensitive writing tablet utilizing a reflective bistable cholesteric liquid crystal laminated between two conductive-polymer coated polyethyleneterephthalate substrates. The device features a selective pressure response suitable for high-resolution lines to be drawn into the screen. The device is inexpensive, conformable, and laser-cut to any desired shape.
We show for the first time, a novel optically written bistable cholesteric display using a simple electrode structure and reversible photo addressable azo binaphthyl chiral materials. These displays are inherently high resolution, require no drive electronics and can be made flexible.
A new drive scheme is presented for producing uniform grays over large-area, low-resolution cholesteric liquid crystal displays. Gray-level sensitivity to display non-uniformities is minimized, which simplifies display manufacturing. While applicable to both rigid and flexible displays, the impact on flexible displays will be particularly important with roll to roll manufacturing capability coming online.
