Cholesteric/Polymer Dispersed Light Shutters

We report cholesteric/polymer dispersed (CPD) materials that switch from a reflecting, planar state to a relatively transparent, focal conic state. The reflective wavelength of the CPD materials can be continuously adjusted by varying the cholesteric pitch length. The electro-optic properties of these materials are similar to the recently reported polymer stabilized cholesteric materials; however, the polymer concentration is sufficient to provide a self-sustaining and self-adhering film, offering the potential of large area devices fabricated on flexible substrates.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymer Gel Dispersion for Flat Panel Displays

Optimum concentrations of gel monomer and chiral material are explored to maximize the contrast and reduce the drive voltage of light shutter from cholesteric liquid crystal/polymer gel dispersion. The results indicate that these materials are excellent candidates for use with the active matrix. Their performance is superior in some regards to PDLC materials from isotropic polymers.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymer Gel Dispersion: Reflective Display Application

The electro-optic characteristics of a cholesteric liquid crystal/polymer gel dispersion are explored for application in a front-lit, reflective color display on a passive matrix. The polymer gel introduces a useful form of bistability to the cholesteric states and substantially improves the uniformity and color brilliance at wide angles of view.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Polymer Dispersion for Haze Free Light Shutters

A new dispersion involving a polymer in low concentration with a cholesteric liquid crystal is reported. Two types of light modulators from these materials are described as a normal mode shutter which is opaque (light scattering) in the field OFF state and transparent in the field ON state and a reverse mode shutter with the opposite field conditions. The transparent state of both cells is haze free for all viewing angles making the material attractive for window applications and direct view displays.

Front-Lit Flat Panel Display from Polymer Stabilized Cholesteric Textures

We report for the first time a liquid crystal flat-panel display with gray scale levels stable at zero field. The passive matrix display with a resolution of 80 lines/inch is made possible by the multistable states of a polymer stabilized cholesteric texture (PSCT). Bragg reflected colored light yields high contrast images under ambient lighting conditions.

Cholesteric Liquid Crystal / Polymer Gel Dispersion Bistable at Zero Field

A new liquid crystal/polymer gel dispersion reported here two contrasting optical states which are stable at zero field; one state reflects light at a preselected color and the other state is scattering. In a display cell the material can be selectively driven to either state by a suitable voltage pules. The potential of the material for multiplexing is described.

Kent Displays is the world leader in the research, development, and manufacture of Reflex™ Liquid Crystal Display products.
The unique "No Power" attribute of Kent Displays' ChLCD products permits image retention without power, offering unprecedented
energy savings in many applications. Superior optical performance over extreme viewing angles, combined with the
reflective nature of the Cholesteric LCD offers unmatched readability, even in direct sunlight.
