Low Power Cholesteric LCDs and Electronic Books.
  • We discuss the state of the art of bistable reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display technology. Numerous applications from low resolution signs, to medium resolution instrumentation type displays, and high resolution electronic books are discussed. Different modes of the technology are discussed as being viable for the respective display applications. Special emphasis is paid to electronic book applications.
Applications of Cholesteric LCDs: from Signs to Electronic Paper.
  • The bistable reflective cholesteric liquid crystal display (ChLCD) technology is an attractive technology for existing passive matrix LCD companies for technology expansion or upgrading because they can be manufactured on existing TN and STN manufacturing lines with limited modification, which implies low investment risk. ChLCDs are also appealing to display integrators because of their unique optical properties and low power consumption. We present an overview of the technological status of ChLCDs and further focus on its applications in various fields.
Novel Drive Techniques and Temperature Compensation Mechanisms in Reflective Cholesteric Displays.
  • The driving techniques used for bistable reflective cholesteric displays are typically a function of application, temperature, and other material constraints. As such, new and unique driving techniques are employed continuously in order to optimize the updating methods of cholesteric displays. This paper focuses on several such techniques and related issues with these methods.

Kent Displays is the world leader in the research, development, and manufacture of Reflex™ Liquid Crystal Display products.
The unique "No Power" attribute of Kent Displays' ChLCD products permits image retention without power, offering unprecedented
energy savings in many applications. Superior optical performance over extreme viewing angles, combined with the
reflective nature of the Cholesteric LCD offers unmatched readability, even in direct sunlight.
