Cholesteric LCDs: Applications, Interface, and Integration
  • We will discuss the recent integration and interface advances of bistable reflective cholesteric LCDs. The new interface architecture is designed to enable easier and faster integration into new OEM devices and to facilitate transfer from existing LCD technologies. A technological overview is also presented.
Reflective Cholesteric LCDs for Electronic Paper Applications.
  • Bistable reflective cholesteric liquid crystal displays are a superior choice for electronic books, readers, and dictionaries. These displays are developed to produce high brightness black and white states with gray levels and fast low cost passive driving methods. This paper will discuss recent advances in the black & white technology and its applications.
Reflective cholesteric displays: From rigid to flexible.
  • Bistable reflective cholesteric liquid-crystal displays are low-power displays that are suitable for a variety of applications ranging from signage to high-resolution electronic books. Recent advancements have included higher brightness, full color, black and white from a single layer, and lighting solutions. Cholesteric displays also lend themselves to simple integration into flexible materials since they may be coated and printed. We have developed reflective cholesteric displays on thin flexible plastic substrates, as well as other unconventional substrates such as paper and drapable fabrics. This paper serves as a review for recent advances in the cholesteric-display technology at Kent Displays.
Distinguished Contributed Paper: Single Substrate Encapsulated Cholesteric LCDs: Coatable, Drapable and Foldable.
  • We have developed the first ever reflective cholesteric liquid crystal displays on single textile substrates made with simple coating processes. This paper reports on a novel approach for fabrication of ultra-thin encapsulated cholesteric liquid crystal displays with transparent conducting polymers as bottom and top electrodes. These displays are fabricated from bottom-up by sequential coating of various functional layers on fabric materials. Encapsulation of the cholesteric liquid crystal droplets in polymer matrix and mechanical flexibility of the conducting polymers allow us to create durable and highly conformable textile displays. We discuss the development and status of this next generation display technology for both monochrome and multi-color cholesteric displays.
Flexible Encapsulated Cholesteric LCDs by Polymerization Induced Phase Separation.
  • We demonstrate a cholesteric liquid crystal-polymer dispersion where the liquid crystal is encapsulated via polymerization induced phase separation. A polymerizable additive formulation is used to control the liquid crystal droplet size. Encapsulation prevents the flow of liquid crystal thereby preserving the bistable texture when the display is flexed.
